DAVID ROBERTS, MBA, EA, PMP

MANAGING PARTNER, TAX AND RETIREMENT PLANNER

David Roberts founded the firm Roberts Tax and Retirement Planning in 2009 after leaving the IRS as a revenue agent. Seeing the need for quality tax professionals, he established the company in order to provide tax services in conjunction with retirement planning.

“We take a holistic approach to help our clients meet their unique retirement needs; holistic meaning we include tax planning, investment planning, and a true partnership over a lifetime in our scope of services. This is huge. We feel the firms that don’t include tax planning and preparation can’t provide clients with well-rounded financial advice that will not only help them through retirement, but will help them through the generations. It’s not just how much money you make, it’s how much tax-advantaged money your family keeps,” David says.

David has worked in the tax and financial services industry for more than 15 years, and has many different experiences, talents and qualifications that he brings to the table for the firm’s clients. David has been part of the adjunct faculty in accounting and finance at several Arizona universities; he was an IRS revenue agent, a controller at securities-traded companies, and served in the Army in psychological warfare operations (PSYWAR).

“My experience is such that I read clients to help ensure that they understand the goals and projected outcomes for their plan, no matter what their concerns and objectives are. No two clients are exactly the same, each is completely unique,” David says.

“My biggest satisfaction is in seeing my clients’ life success stories,” he continues. “It is important to navigate the landmines of multiple retirement risks, including taxation. We work hard to earn trust, not just expect it. We meet with clients quarterly, and more often if needed. We strive to know our clients beyond just the numbers, because retirement is not just about numbers, it’s about the enjoyment of life.”

David earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and his MBA in accounting and finance from Regis University. He is an EA (Enrolled Agent), a tax practitioner who is licensed at the federal level by the Internal Revenue Service, the highest credential awarded by the IRS. (CPAs are licensed at the state level.) Once named “Rookie of the Year” by Nationwide, he holds a life insurance license in Arizona and Colorado, and is securities and tax licensed in all 50 states.

Additionally, David earned the PMP (Project Management Professional) designation. He says, “At Roberts Tax and Retirement Planning, we employ a project approach, laying out year-by-year expectations so there is clear and transparent relationship at all times. Percentages and dollars matter, but you have to see beyond them, to aim well beyond the short term to achieve lasting success.”

David is married to operations manager Amanda Roberts, who was by his side as he established the firm; they have four grown children and one granddaughter. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf. As a disabled combat veteran, David supports multiple charitable organizations for veterans in the community.
