As the temperature rises, people start to set their sights on their summer vacation. Where they’ll go, how they’ll get there, and (most importantly) how they’ll pay. An average family can spend a lot of money on their good time.
According to a survey from 2013, “The average American family of four will spend $4,580 on vacation travel this summer.” Or roughly, $1150 per person. Talk about a drain on your finances. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Research is Key
So you’ve always wanted to take that cruise, or relax on the beach in the Bahamas, that sounds like a great way to spend a week or two. But the key to getting their without burning down your bank account is to compare and contrast. Do your research. Look for deals, reduced rates, cheaper airfare, booking at the last minute, lowers costs associated with traveling on a Monday versus a Friday. Then, the minute you see a good rate, pounce on it. The savings will add up fast.
Look for Discounts
Discounted hotels, airfare, and travel plans are everywhere. Find hotels that offer free upgrades for becoming a member of their suite programs. Discover ways that rewards programs’ points can earn you discounts on the things you buy while on vacation. If you vacation a lot, check out what AAA has to offer. Don’t be afraid to cut corners that won’t effect your experience.
Take Advantage of Free
Depending on where you are going, there will be lots of tourist attractions to visit and enjoy. With those always comes tourism groups, and that means paying for your experience. Instead of breaking the bank paying to look at an attraction, go it alone. Or, better yet, set up your itinerary so that it allows for your own time spent. And do it all for free.
Going on vacation doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. With a little wise planning, and a few cut corners, your savings will add up right in front of your eyes.
